Graphic Organisers

Filed Under (Information Skills, Uncategorized) by jbuhagiar on 11-09-2007

Following from our “Learn to Read : Read to Learn” session with Sarah McDonald from Charles Sturt University, I have found some good sites with graphic organisers that will be very helpful. As Sarah said, research has shown that summarising and use of graphic organisers are among strategies that improve comprehension.

In our information abundant world, these tools are also used frequently in our Information Skills process, especially in the Select, Organise and Present  steps.

Look at the sites listed below, especially the edhelper site, which has visually attractive organisers that are still very practical. There are lots to choose from, but as Sarah reminded us, choose only 1 or 2 at a time to introduce so that the children can master them without confusion.

I liked some of the organizers on the Houghton Mifflin site. The other sites wouldn’t load. There are some great books about using graphic organizers available through Kagan online you need to look in the catalog and then click on graphic organizers and mindmaps. There is a four book series about developing reading, writing and thinking skills through the use of graphic organizers.

Most of the learning sites have focused on the quality of the content. And very few of them have focused on the overall user experience of students, parents and guardians.

I came across one of the relatively newer sites called MathGuruji. ( http://www.mathguruji.com ). This site has focused on both content and user experience.

You may want to check Mathguruji out.
