Multiplication by Drawing Lines

Welcome back for 2008.  We’ll start with a little multiplication strategy you may not have seen before…

This was brought to my attention via John Connell’s blog.  This could spark some interesting thought.  Certainly not one of the “variety of calculation strategies” that I would normally consider.

It is great, isn’t it?? I got out some paper and a pen and tried a few larger numbers as well - just to see if it only works for the two and three digit examples. It did work, but the diagrams get a bit messy and you have to be careful not to go blind counting the dots! Easier to understand how it works if you do the ‘old way’ (long multiplication) along side it. Very clever!
